Naming Ceremonies are - • Great fun

• provided by a Civil Celebrant to welcome this new child into their family and their community.

• a joyous time of acceptance of this new life in the midst of people who love her/him.

They –

• create an opportunity for the acceptance of other special people as physical or spiritual guardians (or mentors), who are pleased to provide guidance and protection for this new person.

• can be held anywhere: in the home, garden, or some other chosen place.

• may have an overall theme; such as flowers, fairies, balloons, crystals, candles, chosen for the specific meaning they hold for the parent/s and/or guests.

• set the scene for a broader celebration of life afterwards; with food, drink, lots of talk – and lots of expressions of love between all the people concerned.

• add enormously to the feeling of celebration that this new life is among us.

Naming Ceremonies are becoming more widely used in this country. They replace, or add to, the traditional religious ceremony of Baptism, for people who either aren't part of a religious congregation, or who want their son or daughter to be able to make their own decisions about baptism (or other Rite of Membership of a non-Christian religious group) when they are old enough to do so.
